By Paula Bernier, Executive Editor, IP Communications Magazines

It was a good day for tech stocks today, and it’s shaping up to be a pretty decent quarter for M&A in this sector as well.

As Teresa Mastrangelo notes in her The Voice of Broadband newsletter distributed yesterday, the tech sector saw a fair amount of mergers and acquisitions as well as a bit of funding action this quarter.

The Windsor Oaks Group LLC analyst notes this month alone has seen Ampal-American Israel Corp. acquire 012 Smile; Motorola buy BitBan; Liberty Global (News - Alert) grab Unity Media; SP Telemedia Ltd. get PIPE Networks; and HP purchase 3Com. Also this month, Cavium acquired MontaVista; GigOptix made plans to acquire ChipX;  GridPoint bought ADMMicro; Telefonica moved to close a deal with Hansenet; Windstream move on NuVox (News - Alert); and Cisco get DVN’s set-top box business.

And just last month Amdocs bought jNetX; Hitachi moved to acquire Nortel’s Packet Core technology; Tellabs (News - Alert) got WiChorus; Ixia moved on Agilent’s N2X data networks product line; Lantiq garnered Aware’s home networking and DSL lines; and Etisalat snagged a 16.6 percent stake in SoftAtHome.

Over the past couple of months, meanwhile, Google grabbed both AdMob and Gizmo5 (News - Alert), while ASSIA secured $10 million and Sezmi raised $25 million in new financing.
