By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributor

The wireless networking initiative of Norsat International, Inc., in Malawi, Africa, is now operational.

Norsat’s partner in Malawi, Tonse Solution, has successfully completed testing of the wireless equipment. Norsat International (News - Alert) Inc. provides broadband communication solutions that enable the transmission of data, audio and video in remote and austere environments.

The equipment -- recently tested and approved by a team of engineers -- has been assembled in a quick fashion and several weeks ahead of schedule. As a result, Tonse has now commenced solicitation of wireless broadband capabilities.

Tonse, based in Lilongwe, is a newly licensed broadband network operator that utilizes wireless networking technologies to offer reliable and more affordable voice, data and video solutions than currently available.

Norsat’s wireless networking initiative in Malawi is based on a purchase order from Tonse for $1,000,000 worth of wireless equipment and software to build a wireless broadband system in Lilongwe.

According to Amiee Chan, Ppesident and CEO of Norsat, the company is pleased to hear from its partner, Tonse, that the wireless networking equipment is functional. This is the first necessary step in building up Norsat’s wireless networking initiative in Malawi.

Now, potential customers in the city of Lilongwe (the capital of Malawi) will be able to assess for themselves what this wireless network has to offer them. Chan added that Norsat will continue to report to shareholders as additional information develops.
