Berkeley Varitronics Systems Win More Industry Awards

Berkeley Varitronics Systems, Inc. (BVS), a provider of advanced WiMAX (News - Alert) testing and security products, has won more awards to add to its showcase of accomplishments for the Wolfhound family of security products.

On Oct 24th in Orlando, FL, the International Association of Chiefs of Police Conference held their annual ceremony that included the 2010 Innovation Awards. BVS’s Wolfhound-LITE Cell Phone (News - Alert) Detector won the award in the “Corrections & Security” category.

BVS also won the 2010 Mid-Atlantic Innovation Competition in the “Telecommunications Industry” category presented by the New Jersey Technology Council for the Wolfhound and Wolfhound-LITE Cell Phone Detectors. BVS was also awarded one of only four first place awards ‘for the products’ uniqueness and ability to succeed.

In addition, the Wolfhound was also recognized for having the leading product in the wireless security category at the 2010 GovSec Expo and Conference in Washington, D.C., making BVS the proud own of three high profile awards to date.

“In less than one year we have sold hundreds of our Wolfhound and Wolfhound-LITE cell phone detection tools to both domestic and international correctional facilities to combat the growing problem of contraband cell phones and these industry awards are a further indication of our success,” said Scott Schober (News - Alert), President & CEO of BVS.

According to the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications and Information Administration “NTIA”, the use of contraband cell phones by inmates has risen as the U.S. prison population continues to expand. Contraband cell phones in correctional facilities are becoming the number one issue for prison officials. In 2006, California correctional officers seized approximately 261 cell phones in the State's prisons and camps; by October 2009, that number had jumped to 4,130.

The Wolfhound-LITE allows correctional facilities to enforce an affordable no cell phone policy, since each security officer could potentially be equipped with a cell phone detector. A further application of the products is in campus and testing environments where cell phones can be used to share or store access to unauthorized information.

“The exciting part about a mobile cell phone detection tool is that we continue to grow our customer base selling to many federal customers, security personnel, universities, and even getting attention from fleet management integrators,” added Schober.
