Details Emerge About New Sprint WiMAX 4G Phone

While many technology analysts feel the way forward for the United States in wireless technology is for providers to coordinate – in an E.U. style model – rather than work against one another, this hasn't stopped the fierce competition between providers.

The latest war, that between LTE and WiMAX 4G, shows no signs of cooling off. While LTE-based handsets are hot right now, a new “hero” may be rushing to the WIMAX cause, writes Julian Vogel of goingWimax.com., and that is Sprint's newest (but still rumored) darling, the D600 Conquer 4G.

While the official release date for the Conquer is July 15, details about the phone have leaked all over the press. It will be a WiMAX supported handset that will fall into the mid-range of Sprint phones in terms of price, making it the first 4G WiMAX phone available outside of Sprint’s high-end handsets, writes Vogel.

The phone is an Android-based device manufactured by Samsung. In fact, it's Samsung that dropped the secrecy about the phone by publishing an image of it with some details on its Web site (the page that contained the details in now labeled as “unavailable,” so someone apparently caught the goof). The Conquer has a 3.5-inch HVGA display, 1GHz processor and a 3.2 megapixel main camera with flash, with and 1.3 megapixel user-facing camera. The Conquer 4G will include Sprint iD, which offers users bundled themes and software for their Android devices, writes PhoneScoop's Eric Zeman.

The FCC approved this handset in April with CDMA in the ESMR 800MHz band, 850MHz band, and the 1900MHz band, making it a tri-band CDMA device, wrote Zeman. ESMR support means the phone will eventually be able to use voice services on Sprint's 800MHz spectrum when it transitions iDEN off that spectrum.
