Timothy Wagner, vice president and general manager at Samsung Telecommunications, is one of the busier attendees at ITEXPO East 2012, currently underway in Miami.
Wagner was one of the four keynote speakers to help kick off the technology and communications conference on Wednesday, and will be leading the highly anticipated Mobile Opportunities & Security in the Enterprise Sector session scheduled to begin Friday, Feb. 3 at 9 a.m. His discussion is part the 4GWE Conference, an event collocated with ITEXPO East 2012 that focuses on monetizing the mobile broadband network.
While preparing for his upcoming session – which will detail a number of ways for operators to take advantage of the explosion of mobile deployments in the enterprise – Wagner took a few minutes to catch up with TMC CEO Rich Tehrani.
In the interview below, Wagner talks about Samsung's focus on 4G technologies and its strategy in addressing the need for multiple radios and frequency bands. He also touches on how the millennial generation – a demographic that demands constant connectivity – is changing the mobile market and creating near-limitless opportunities for device manufacturers and operators.

Where do we stand on the true migration to 4G? Do you see a smooth transition or issues that still must be overcome?
Samsung fully embraces 4G technologies across the board by implementing LTE and WIMAX, and more, as all major carriers and the market have demanded.
We are now at the point where LTE is baked into the chipsets; what does that mean for interoperability?
Samsung’s ability to manufacture and incorporate LTE radios into our devices is maturing. While costs are reducing, standards are improving and becoming more solidified.
Much of our discussion at the event is about Internet and spectrum policy. What are your concerns about implementation and regulation?
Samsung has addressed the needs of multiple technologies existing in the industry. We have built devices with multiple radios and frequency bands within them, while simultaneously managing battery life to ensure a quality user experience.
Ultimately, the mobile Internet is going to run totally on IP. Does this mean we are going to see the Internet as being the only network, or will we see differences between mobile and the rest of the Web?
While carriers drive this evolution from a circuit switched to a packet switched environment, Samsung will be ready to support them from a hardware standpoint, as standards solidify for routing voice over an all IP network.
Often our lessons are generational based on our kids and the millennials now entering the work force. What are seeing that excites use based on these new users?
The millennial generation is at the forefront of mobile technology, with constant connectivity via smartphones and tablets as a focal point in their personal and professional lives. While social media, social networking and mobile “apps” are becoming increasingly integrated into business processes, device manufacturers have been provided a unique opportunity to engage a growing prosumer market.
Why is 4GWE a must-attend communications event?
4GWE presents carriers, device manufacturers, application developers and mobile enterprises with a unique opportunity to explore what impact they can expect from this new network infrastructure, and how to remain competitive within this environment.
