SpiderCloud Secures $35 Million to Improve Mobile Coverage Indoors

SpiderCloud Wireless, a networking equipment startup, raised $35 million to help improve mobile network coverage indoors for business and enterprise customers. This technology allows cell phones to become a productive part of the workplace with fewer dropped calls and increased ability to utilize mobile applications.

According to VentureBeat, the $35 million in funding is in addition to $25 million received during its last round of fundraising. In all, the company has raised $75 million to help support its in-building mobile coverage technology. Key investors include Matrix Partners, Charles River Ventures, Opus Capital and Shasta Ventures.

SpiderCloud Wireless believes in-building mobile reception is a key problem for many large businesses. Bruce Sachs of Charles River Ventures, one of the key investors in SpiderCloud, recently told the Wall Street Journal “One of the biggest issues in wireless is the lack of in-building coverage. There haven’t been any good solutions.”

The SpiderCloud system consists of two main elements: SpiderCloud Radio Node (SCRN) and SpiderCloud Services Node (SCSN). The SCRN strategically mounted around the building communicate back to the SCSN which then connects to the operator’s core network.

One of the key advantages SpiderCloud’s technology brings to the table is its fast deployment. It takes a matter of days, instead of weeks for similar systems, to equip a large building with the system. It works alongside the existing Ethernet infrastructure.

Mike Gallagher, CEO of SpiderCloud, told the New York Times, “As more businesses use mobile devices as the primary way for employees to communicate, and these devices consume more and more data, high-speed cellular coverage is business-critical—particularly inside busy office buildings. This product provides businesses with an affordable, easy-to-install solution that enables employees to make the most of their mobile devices where ever they may be.”

Gallagher said this would be the last round of funding for SpiderCloud.
