Amazon Will be Selling the Nokia 808 Pureview in the U.S.

Since its announcement in February 2012, the Nokia 808 Pureview has fascinated both camera enthusiasts and mobile aficionados alike and in all fairness, a smartphone with an unbelievable 41 megapixel camera will have such effect. Even though some of the critics have dismissed the 41 megapixel camera as nothing more as a gimmick from Nokia, credit must be given to the Finnish mobile giants for attempting a 41 megapixel 1/1.2" sensor and piquing the interest of the mobile community and consumers alike.

The Nokia 808 Pureview fate in the United States was always a little uncertain, but today Nokia has made its intentions clear. The company will be bringing the smartphone to the U.S. through online retail giant Amazon. It was announced today that the Nokia 808 Pureview will be available SIM-free through Amazon for $699 and will be compatible with SIM cards from T-Mobile and AT&T. Unfortunately, the Nokia 808 Pureview will only support 2G speeds on the T-Mobile network, but maybe a workaround will be found.

For the uninitiated, the Nokia 808 Pureview is a Nokia Belle powered smartphone, which was first spotted at the Mobile World Congress in February 2012. Unlike similarly priced smartphones today, the Nokia 808 grabbed headlines not for its operating system, but for it’s on board 41 megapixel 1/1.2" sensor and a high resolution f/2.4 Zeiss all-aspherical 1-group lens. The 808 Pureview also has the distinction of being the first smartphone to feature Nokia's PureView technology. The advanced image technology uses a pixel oversampling system, which condenses an image taken at full resolution into a lower resolution picture. This in turn helps in accomplishing higher definition and light sensitivity, and also enables lossless zoom.

Apart from its cutting-edge photography performance, the Nokia 808 Pureview also impresses with its oversampling of all 38Mega-pixels even at the high video data rates of 1080p with 30 fps, Dolby Headphone software, Dolby Digital Plus software to provide 5.1 surround sound via HDMI or DLNA and Nokia Rich Recording technology, which has a frequency range between 25 Hz to around 19 kHz. It features a 4-inch AMOLED 2.5D curved qHD display  with Gorilla glass and offers connectivity options like Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n etc.

While there is no official confirmation about the U.S. release of the Nokia 808 Pureview pre-orders for the handset will start on Amazon this week.
