Endomondo Sports Tracker App Logs 320 Million Miles, Reaches Milestone of 10 Million Users

Great news for fitness app lovers: The Endomondo Sports Tracker mobile fitness app has reached the 10 million user mark, tripling the number of adoptees in less than a year while remaining the most highly rated fitness app across multiple mobile platforms. In celebration of this milestone, Endomondo will be offering the PRO version of its app for only $1 from June 27 to July 1.

The Sports Tracker is a social fitness network that brings together technology like location-based GPS with social networking capabilities to motivate users toward more fun and greater fitness. Using GPS, the app tracks route, distance, duration, split times, calorie consumption and more, while providing audio feedback on performance. The app offers a full history with previous workouts and statistics, as well as a localized route map for each workout. On certain handsets, the app also supports integration with the built-in music player and different heart rate monitors.

Endmondo’s fitness app embraces the importance of integrating social media. The most popular use of Facebook through the app is posting workouts to a user’s Timeline. The stats show that users connected to five friends or more track five times as many workouts as users with no friends.

Since it first launched in 2008, Endomondo has helped users track 320 million miles of physical activity, equivalent to 1,335 trips to the moon. The most common physical activities logged were running, cycling and walking. Almost half of the miles logged came from cyclists, who peddled 144 million miles. Running accounted for 44 percent of total workouts and was responsible for 87 million miles, or more than three million marathons. Walking totaled up to more than 24 million miles.

The social nature of the service has a lot to do with the app’s success. Since launching its Facebook Timeline capability earlier in 2012, traffic from Facebook increased by more than 150 percent and around 50,000 workouts are now shared daily on the social network. According to Mette Lykke, co-founder of Endomondo, the social aspect is the main differentiator between Edmondo’s Sports Tracker and other mobile fitness apps.

“Our mission is to make fitness fun by making it more social and more engaging,” said Lykke. “Most of our users find it motivating to connect with friends, family and co-workers around fitness. Users can give pep talks to one another, comment on each others’ workouts and challenge each other. The fact that our service becomes more motivating with the more friends you’ve got is a key driver for Endomondo’s growth rate which is currently at more than 20,000 new users per day.”

The PRO version is offered for a discounted price for a limited time. With the PRO version, which currently has 700,000 users, users can access features such as interval training, interactive graphs with lap times, speed, altitude and heart rate, time and calorie goals and the “Beat Yourself” feature.

“We really believe in the social aspect,” Lykke told MobilityTechzone. “I can type in a message and it’s read out loud to you as a real-time message—that’s just an example of the social features. You can use the tools to be creative and cheer each other on. Features like ‘Beat a Friend’ allow you to race against each other virtually. The audio coach will tell me how I’m doing compared to you.”

The fitness app provider hopes to reach 15 million users by the end of the year.

Endomondo works on mobile devices including Android, iPhone, BlackBerry, Windows Phone, Symbian, Windows Mobile and Java. It can be downloaded for free or for $3.99 for the premium version. To join the social fitness network the cost is $6/month or $39 annually. For more information, visit www.endomondo.com
