Ten Percent of Mobile Devices are Powered by Ice Cream Sandwich OS, Says Google

Since its introduction nearly nine months ago, Google’s Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) or Android 4.0.x operating system (OS) has crossed 10 percent adoption mark, according to online technology site Tom’s Guide.

Reporter Jane McEntegart wrote that the biggest challenge for Android OS is fragmentation. Because each new iteration of the OS has to flow from the manufacturer to the carrier before reaching the consumers, the majority of users are many months behind the latest version of the Android OS, wrote McEntegart.

Per Tom’s Guide report, even though Google has moved on from ICS to Jelly Bean, the next Android 4.1 version, the vast majority of users are still waiting for ICS.

Latest data collected by Google shows that the adoption of ICS OS is slowly moving upwards. This data, collected via the Google Play Store for 14 days leading up to July 2, shows that over 10 percent of people are now running Android 4.0.x. The search giant reports that 10.7 percent of people are running Android 4.0.3 or 4.0.4, while another 0.2 percent use early versions of Android 4.0 (4.0 - 4.0.2).

Nevertheless, Gingerbread OS is reportedly still the dominant version of Android, powering some 63 percent of Android phones, followed by Froyo (17 percent) and Eclair (4.7 percent). Simultaneously, an insignificant number continues to use Cupcake or Donut (0.7 percent).

Meanwhile, Google continues to release newer versions of Android. Last week, the search giant unveiled Jelly Bean, which will be offered only to a select few when it rolls out next month, wrote McEntegart.

This report says that Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus and Motorola Xoom will be among the first Jelly Bean powered mobile devices.
