Scam Detector Launches Free Android App

Although the Internet has brought a lot of people together, unfortunately some of them are scammers. There is a way for consumers to fight back, using Scam Detector, now available as an Android application.

“Hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world requested an Android version. We are now happy to provide that now in the Google Play Store. We will also keep updating the app on regular basis, with the newest scams", Sorin Mihailovici, VP of Business Development for Scam Detector Inc. said.

The free Android app joins the iOS version and the website in allowing consumers to research known scams as well as report new ones. It is available in the Google Play store.

The scams include those involving buying and selling cars, face to face scams, Internet scams and travel scams.

There are pages for each scam, spelling out in detail what messages look like, and how consumers can avoid them.

An example from one of the pages shows an e-mail purporting to be a notification of a declined credit card charge from eBay:

The statement reads,“We are writing to alert you that your balance is not paid, because your credit card company declined eBay's attempt to charge your card. Your payment is due ASAP. To speed up this process, you are required to place another credit card on the account you have on file. Update your credit card here (the scammers provide a link). As a courtesy, eBay will automatically make a second attempt to charge your card. This attempt will take place in about three to five business days. As a reminder, past due accounts may be restricted from buying or selling until payment is received.”

The page goes on to explain that eBay does not charge credit cards directly, but instead uses PayPal.

People also pull scams in real life as well as online. One clever and brazen scam has thieves hanging posters warning that pickpockets are in the area and telling people to check their wallets. As people instinctively reach into their pockets, the thieves know exactly where their marks are keeping their money.
