Polycom Enhances RealPresence Mobile Software

If you’ve read my recent article about Polycom, you might remember my mentioning that there were several interesting announcements that were under embargo. Well, the embargo has been lifted, and I’m free to talk all about the new products and services coming our way.

First of all, Polycom’s RealPresence Mobile software has been updated to 1.3, now with camera control features that let viewers control the camera from their side of the screen. It’s not only useful just for getting a better look at speakers or rooms, but it’s particularly useful for getting a close look at important details. At the demo, for example, we were shown how doctors could use it to examine patients when they’re away from the office, closely examining the patient through the camera’s zoom.

The Polycom RealPresence platform, which powers RealPresence Mobile, has also been enhanced to support up to 10,000 simultaneous devices. This is thanks in part to the RealPresence Resource Manager, a new solution for scheduling, management and provisioning.

It’s also designed to help IT administrators manage their video collaboration network, and simplify the scheduling and management of video collaboration calls.

At the same time, Polycom is proving open APIs and software development kits to channel partners, service providers, independent software vendors and customers. These can be used to develop new software applications for the RealPresence Platform, like with the Android announcement last week.

As someone who saw the Polycom demo, I can attest to the impressiveness of the mobile software. The video quality remained high as it zoomed in on various audience members, while the camera was being controlled by an iPad. The demonstrations showed how useful the RealPresence Mobile can be for work in the health industry, and is already being used by Orlando Health to assess and treat stroke victims with much greater speed.

It’s impressive, so if you’ve been considering Polycom software, it can’t hurt to check it out.
