Samsung Acquires CSR's Mobile Handset Technology for $310 Million

The Samsung Group, which is headquartered in Samsung Town, Seoul, is one of the largest international corporations of consumer electronics, telecoms equipment, semiconductors and home appliances. It is the operating subsidiary of the technology producer, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., which has, over the years, broken new ground in the areas of display devices (LCD and LED), for both the television and tablet computer market.

Other than taking over the cell phone industry, today, Samsung Electronics is a protagonist in the global market in high-tech electronics manufacturing and digital media; its products are recognized at the forefront of technology. The company is creating products that appeal to the market and consumers are responding; it is also achieving a substantial growth with high margins and returns.

According to reports, Samsung recently purchased the handset unit development of CSR plc (formerly Cambridge Silicon Radio), a company registered in England and Wales, for $310 million (£198.2m). It is a binding agreement that represents both the transaction and the equity investment. This investment adds immediate value for each company as well as for their shareholders. The settlement adds in a patent, which includes intellectual property rights for using, selling, and distributing the patented invention without permission.

The arrangement to acquire the U.K.-based company will put the British chipmaker, Cambridge Silicon Radio's in a better position to rise in the global handset market and increase its growth potential and profitability, says CSR's chief executive, Joep van Beurden.

Samsung's president of System LSI Business, Device Solutions, Stephen Woo, says the deal will help strengthen the South Korean company's smartphone sales and reinforce its position as a leading semiconductor solutions provider.

The purchase will provide Samsung with the handset technology and technical support it needs to continue to pioneer technological innovation by adding more R&D capability to its platforms; the application processors will help ensure its mobile chip and handset businesses stay competitive.
