China Mobile Hong Kong, a subsidiary of the world's largest mobile operator China Mobile Ltd., has selected telecommunications provider Ericsson to expand its commercial LTE network. China Mobile is planning to expand the LTE network using time-division long-term evolution (TD-LTE) technology, marketed commercially as 4G LTE.
In fact, according to ZDNet reporter Charlie Osborne, currently, Ericsson is the only supplier for China Mobile Hong Kong's LTE network, a project that was kicked off in 2007. However, other companies initially involved in co-developing the LTE network for China Mobile include Datang Telecom, China Mobile, Huawei, ZTE, Nokia Siemens Networks and Alcatel.
The companies intend to build a converged LTE FDD/TDD network, leveraging the LTE FDD installed base. In addition, the report indicates that Ericsson will also be upgrading the operator's existing Evolved Packet Core (EPC) network.
China Mobile Hong Kong launched the LTE FDD mobile data services in April this year. Consequently, exploiting the new deal with Ericsson, the China Mobile Hong Kong now plans to launch a TD-LTE network compliant with 3GPP standards. The operator is planning to introduce the new service before the year-end.
Sean Lee, director and CEO of China Mobile Hong Kong, said, "We chose Ericsson, a global leader in the LTE space, as our TD-LTE network partner." He added, "By partnering with Ericsson and maximizing our spectrum asset, we will build a converged LTE FDD/TDD network that gives our customers an even better 4G experience."
Under the agreement, Ericsson will provide the TD-LTE radio frequency access network, network management services, and expand and upgrade the EPC network. In addition, the telecom equipment provider will host design, training and support services for expansion of the operator's network.
