RadioShack No-Contract Wireless Service to Launch in September

Another company is ready to jump into the mobile market and, rather surprisingly, that company is RadioShack.

According to a leaked internal memo, the electronics retailer is planning to launch its own no contract wireless service as soon as September 5. Obviously, being no contract, customers will pay for voice and data usage as they go, rather than being locked into a fixed monthly fee – a model seen from the likes of Virgin Mobile.

RadioShack's service is going to be powered by none other than Cricket Wireless, a smaller U.S. carrier which offers cheap monthly plans featuring unlimited text and data.

There is currently no information available in regard to RadioShack's planned pricing or which phones will be available from the retailer at launch. Seeing as how it will be a Cricket-powered service, though, it's fair to guess that RadioShack will offer basic feature phones, as well as budget Android devices from Huawei, ZTE and possibly Samsung.

Cricket also just added the BlackBerry Curve 9350 to its phone lineup in June, so it's not impossible that one of RIM's keyboard-centric devices may end up available from RadioShack as well.

Cricket Communications, Inc. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Leap Wireless International. The value-oriented network operator currently serves over six million customers in the U.S.

In April, Cricket announced a partnership with Liberty Tax Services to offer savings on tax preparation as well as the latest Cricket mobile devices. For a short period of time, Cricket customers were able to receive $50 off tax preparation when filing their taxes with Liberty Tax. Meanwhile, a tax service receipt from Liberty would get customers $20 off a new Cricket phone, or 20 percent off any accessory.

Since it appears that RadioShack's wireless service is also value oriented, in addition to the fact that it's brand new and seeking customers, it's likely that potential customers may be able to enjoy similar deals like the Cricket-Liberty Tax promotion.
