LG and Qualcomm Collaborate on New Smartphone with Snapdragon S4 Pro Quad Core Processor

LG Electronics (LG) has confirmed that its next smartphone, currently in production, will be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 quad core processor. The device is expected to be commercially available by September 2012 in Korea, with a global rollout soon after.

This new global device will offer a Snapdragon S4 Quad Core chip and a set of Long Term Evolution (LTE) capabilities. LTE is the first step toward faster, stronger and more efficient 4G data networks. It will also deliver a superior mobile experience for Web browsing, UI (user interfaces), voice, games and other graphics applications, and will include the Adreno 320 GPU and support.

The company claims that the new smartphone will have a brighter HD display and a more powerful battery that runs 60 percent longer than devices on similarly sized batteries.

The piece offers a lifespan of 800 recharge cycles as well.

Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) is a global icon in 3G and next-generation mobile technologies. It has been in the forefront for over 25 years, its inventions having driven the evolution of digital communications.

In addition to the quad-core power, the device will also offer S4 Pro-exclusive features, including seamless toggling between 3G, 4G and LTE networks designed to ensure that calls from the LTE-enabled phone do not drop if users enter an area with a different network.

There are few other details confirmed, but reports of leaked photographs by Androidmx.net and the Verge suggest a 4.7in display, a processor clocked at 1.5GHz and 2GB of RAM.

The new device, supposedly known as the “Optimus G,” is LTE friendly with a 13mp rear camera, although this is unconfirmed. A report by Android Central adds that the device could come with v3.0 of the Optimus User Interface (UI) and become a direct competitor to the Samsung Galaxy S3.

Android Central was skeptical about the possibility of a launch at the IFA in Berlin, starting on August 29, 2012, given Samsung’s intention to launch the Galaxy Note 2 at the event.
