Intel Chips Enabling Wireless Charging by 2014

Intel has confirmed rumors that it is developing a wireless charging solution and has plans to build and incorporate the new technology into its products, with commercialization to take place in 2014.

Using Intel chips, transmitters will be built into tech gadgets like notebooks, ultrabooks, all-in-one PCs and smartphones.

With this wireless charging solution, the need to plug these types of items into a power socket will be eliminated. Instead, charging will involve placing the gadgets on a charging pad or a nearby power source. Details on technical specifications and price are not yet available, but a representative of the company said charging times will be the same as if someone were using a normal USB cable setup.

In line with this, Intel has entered into a partnership with Integrated Device Technology (IDT) to develop an integrated transmitter and receiver for Intel. With this, wireless charging is made possible using resonance technology.

This technology will enable a smartphone to charge wirelessly by placing it next to a laptop or PC outfitted with the appropriate software.

“We are delighted to work with IDT to accelerate the progress toward that vision with their unique and proven skill to integrate the required features and functionality into a monolithic solution,” said Gary Huang, chief of Intel PC growth and innovation.

Huang was also quoted as saying that the company is also working on wireless charging technology, which would eventually make every gadget completely wireless. He said that consumers and customers have been asking for a completely mobile wireless charging experience, and that Intel’s objective is to deliver on consumer demand.

To date, the best known technology for wireless charging is the Duracell Powermat, which charges mobile devices wirelessly. Duracell also has developed a wireless case, which charges a smartphone by outfitting it with a protective case.

IDT targets reference designs and samples by early 2013, which hints that product integration and rollout may happen as early as next year’s holiday season. With the success of the development of its product, Intel can guarantee itself a large portion of profits and recognition.
