AT&T's Vice President Elected as WBA's Chairman

Today, the industry association focused on driving the next generation Wi-Fi experience, The Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA), announced the appointment of its new Chairman, J.R. Wilson VP of Partnerships & Alliances for AT&T Mobility.

After nearly three years as chairman, Chris Bruce, Director of BT, has stepped down and has taken the position as co-chair. Wireless Broadband director of Orange, Cedric Gonin, will remain as treasurer. The day-to-day functions as the WBA CEO, Shrikant Shenwai continues to take the lead. Currently for developing international wireless strategy and partnerships at AT&T, as well as managing domestic, international and Wi-Fi wholesale and retail roaming support, J.R. Wilson is responsible.

In 2010, he joined the WBA Board and as an essential part of the mobile ecosystem, he has played a key role in championing Wi-Fi in ensuring that its benefits are widely recognized throughout the industry.  J.R. Wilson will open proceedings on the 6th November at the Wi-Fi Global Congress in San Francisco hosted by the WBA. The WBA Executive Board now includes representatives from: AT&T, Boingo Wireless, BT, Cisco Systems, Intel Corporation, iPass, KT Corporation, NTT DOCOMO and Orange.

“With Wi-Fi hotspots predicted to grow by 350 percent by 2015, now is the time to drive the message that Wi-Fi is an essential complement to the mobile broadband experience,” said J.R. Wilson, chairman of the Wireless Broadband Alliance.

He concluded that with a significant transformation that is occurring in Wi-Fi the industry, they are very much at the front end. New ideas, companies and business models are flushed in the ecosystem. The WBA’s membership has increased by nearly 50 percent in the last 12 months and they are honored to be a key part of this transformation. The WBA will further accelerate its efforts to advance the Wi-Fi ecosystem such that Wi-Fi is a seamless, secure and interoperable technology.
