Lantiq and ZyXel Make Voice Over LTE Possible with LTE5121 Multi-service Gateway

VoLTE, or voice over long-term evolution, is a standard used for delivering voice and messaging for LTE networks. It is being deployed by global wireless operators to supplements LTE networks.

Lantiq, a renowned supplier of broadband access and home networking technologies; and ZyXel Communications, a world-class networking company providing IP-architected wireline and wireless Internet solutions, have announced that the fixed LTE5121 multi-service gateway now supports VoLTE.

Making VoLTE available on a fixed LTE gateway lets phone service carriers combine different types of content including triple-play services with voice, video and data. This combination improves network efficiency over wireless broadband, resulting in reduced rates for the customer.

The ZyXel LTE5121 is designed to take advantage of the 4G/LTE technology that is being rolled out around the world. The application of VoLTE technology can provide the same services as wired broadband without the expense of last-mile wiring associated with the fixed infrastructure of cable and fiber.

LTE operators are eager to start exploiting all the capabilities of this technology once it has been installed. Until LTE is fully adopted, IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is the default VoLTE platform, with circuit-switch fallback backing up areas where LTE is not available.

"By incorporating the Lantiq network processor, the ZyXEL LTE5121 gateway is able to provide the processing bandwidth to support multiple advanced communications capabilities. This allows us to respond to market evolution quickly and deliver solutions that allow our customers to provide rich media and other premium services to their subscribers," said Wayne Hwang, assistant vice president of Wireless Strategy Business Unit for ZyXEL.

Using Lantiq’s expertise in network processing has helped in creating a multiple-gateway capable of meeting many of the services the market will produce using LTE. As LTE becomes the standard mobile broadband platform, home gateways using this technology will be in demand. Fixed broadband service providers and VoLTE technology will be competing for customers who are increasingly opting for wireless technology whether they are in the home or away.

"ZyXEL has long recognized that carriers have to support a wide range of subscriber services while achieving economies in the platforms they have to support. The LTE5121 is precisely the type of powerful, modular gateway carriers need to meet these dual requirements. Our highly integrated GRX288 network processor helps ZyXEL to address these challenging market requirements," said Dirk Wieberneit, Head of the Customer Premises Equipment Business Unit of Lantiq.

The LTE5121 has a high-performance LTE module and MIMO antenna with up to 100Mbps downlink and 50Mbps uplink connections. It also allows flexible broadband solutions with Internet delivery using Gigabit Ethernet and Wi-Fi. It comes with a 4-port Gigabit Ethernet LAN Switch and 300Mbps Wi-Fi for wireless connections with media servers, as well as two phone ports for VoIP calls.

Another benefit of this gateway is that it will provide broadband service to remote rural areas and under-served sections of the urban population.
