For the second consecutive year, American Greetings Corporation has linked their justWink app with TOMS’ shoes for their public awareness campaign ‘One Day without Shoes.’ The campaign is in its sixth year raising money to help provide footwear for underprivileged children around the world.
The TOMS company is the brainchild of The Amazing Race reality star Blake Mycoskie, an entrepreneur from Arlington, Texas. His profit-based company (TOMS) oversees a non-profit extension, called Friends of Toms. With a business model that was written by Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group, TOMS has a policy that for every pair of shoes that they sell, they donate a pair of shoes to a child in need.
Mycoskie wanted to get people involved in his efforts to help provide shoes for children who desperately need them around the world. He came up with the idea of ‘One Day without Shoes’, a day in which people do not wear shoes for a day, and, when people’s curiosity gets the better of them and they ask why, participants will then explain that they are not wearing shoes to help raise awareness for the shoeless children around the world.
Sebastian Fries, the Chief Giving Officer for TOMS, said that “One Day without Shoes has evolved. Like our company, it started as a small, grassroots idea. But as we have learned about the great potential a simple intervention can have, it is no longer just a day to go barefoot for kids without shoes.”
justWink joined the worthy cause two years ago, and they have created a special line of electronic greeting cards to commemorate the special day. Their unique cards not only let people know about the special event, but also informs them on how they can become involved. In addition to the cards, justWink artists will be painting specially designed TOMS shoes that will be auctioned and the proceeds will go to local charities.
"We love working with TOMS to support One Day without Shoes and are thrilled to be participating again this year. We know that when there's important news to share people instinctively reach for their cell phones, so we wanted to provide them with every tool necessary to help spread the word about this important cause", says branch manager for the justWink app, Lisa Wascovich. The justWink app is available for free on Android, iPhone, Nook, and Kindle Fire. For those who are interested in the ‘One Day without Shoes’ cause, click here.
