FreedomPop Offers Sprint Mobile Broadband

FreedomPop is a wireless startup company designed to offer affordable mobile broadband service. Up until now, its devices have all been tied to Clearwire’s WiMax network, but it has just begun offering a device that works on both WiMax and Sprint’s 3G network.

The Overdrive Pro hotspot is the first of FreedomPop’s devices that will work with Sprint’s network, but is far from the last. It plans to offer more products on Sprint’s LTE network later in the year, as it begins to widen its offerings. The Overdrive Pro will also work with Clearwire’s WiMax network, but the addition of Sprint will make it a more appealing option to Sprint’s already massive customer base.

With the hotspot, users are given 400 megabytes of free data. Anything above that will require an additional fee, as will additional services. The device itself sells for around $40, although users can also trade in their existing devices to switch over.

“The biggest criticism with our service to date has been the coverage gaps in certain parts of the country,” said Stephen Stokols, CEO of FreedomPop. “We’re planning on launching our full national LTE roll-out by the end of this year, but until then, adding nationwide 3G coverage gives users the ability to connect from anywhere.”

With any luck, this will be the first of many new products from FreedomPop that will allow wireless connectivity through different networks. Sprint’s customers should be very pleased with the connectivity that it provides, and following that, more providers may very well be willing to hop onboard and let FreedomPop offer their services through the wireless devices. Good hotspots are still hard to come by these days, so there’s a high demand for affordable mobile broadband services, and FreedomPop offers an affordable option for many.
