Vonage Updates Its iPhone and Android App

Vonage updated its mobile application to fix a list of fairly annoying software problems. The update comes on the heels of the April 13, 2013 update that added VoIP phone capability to the iPhone and Android handsets. Though the April update added video calls, text and voice for Vonage users on both iOS and Android, there were no major updates in this most recent release.

The Vonage app works just like other VoIP services such as Skype, Fring, Tango and Vox. Users can make free calls between each other, but international calls (unless over WiFi) and calls to other landline or mobile phones cost credits. Users can purchase credits from within the app.

However, if you are a current Vonage home or business subscriber, do not get this confused with the Vonage Extensions app, which allows you to make calls and manage your home or business VoIP phone account.

Vonage is working hard to strengthen its mobile VoIP offerings, providing the most popular communications features in one app. Previously Vonage only served home or business locations with VoIP numbers to replace traditional landline phones.

VoIP is starting to take the communications industry by storm. On every mobile handset there is some form of VoIP service in place. The only task left for the digital communication service to completely eliminate the need for a mobile number is the development of a data only device. Currently users have to get a cell phone and a data plan. If data only options existed, users could realize the true potential of cheap phone service

However, even if telecommunications companies could quickly deploy their own versions of VoIP or allowed data only contracts, VoIP still has several limitations that need to be overcome.

If you haven’t already, you can download the newest version of Vonage Mobile in the iTunes Store or Google Play.
