In a surprise move, innovative rapper Jay-Z has announced the launch of his new album, “Magna Carta Holy Grail,” during last night’s Game 5 of the NBA Finals between the Miami Heat and the San Antonio Spurs, a game incidentally won by San Antonio 114-104. To further catch people by surprise, Jay-Z is making the album free to the one million owners of Samsung Galaxy S3, S4 and Note 2 devices.
Samsung users will get first shot at the new album on July 4, with the only catch being that they must download an app associated with the album on June 24.
The website for the album features a Samsung commercial and a countdown clock leading up to the July 4 launch. This unique partnership will allow Samsung users a 72-hour advance download of the song before its worldwide debut.
"We don't have any rules; everybody is trying to figure it out. That's why the Internet is like the Wild West, the Wild Wild West. We need to write the new rules," Jay-Z said.
This album will be Jay-Z’s first in three years, following his highly acclaimed “The BluePrint 3” album. Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Corey Knowles-Carter, is not only an accomplished musical artist, but also a very astute business man. He is the co-creator of the famous urban line of clothing, Rocawear, and he is the co-owner of the 40/40 clubs and the NBA team the Brooklyn Nets. He is also known for his high-profile marriage to singer/actress Beyonce Knowles and the birth of their daughter, Blue Ivy Carter. This unique use of technology may prove to be yet another triumph for the successful Knowles-Carter duo.
This advertising campaign is a first of its kind for Samsung and for Jay-Z. The offer to Samsung users by Jay-Z will make current users extremely happy and, presumably, make non-users very envious. This type of campaign is sure to help Samsung in its battle for mobile supremacy.
