What Color Would You Pick for an iPhone 5S or 5C?

If you want to throw in a different or new feature geared to grab people’s attention, then you can never go wrong with color. Change the color of the shell and you have an entirely new product that will make more people say, “I want that!”

We know that in just a couple of weeks, Apple is going to unveil and make available its latest iPhone incarnation. In fact, we are looking at two incarnations. We will soon see the iPhone 5S and 5C. The iPhone 5C is a plastic shelled, colorful version of today's iPhone 5.

Why plastic? The casing of the iPhone 5C could reduce manufacturing costs by $17 per phone, according to Morgan Stanley analyst Jasmine Lu. It is also supposed to be a way for Apple to try to enter into the low end smartphone market in China as well as other emerging markets.

The problem is that while the iPhone 5C has a plastic shell and is cheaper to manufacture, it is likely that the 5C won’t be any cheaper for consumers than the previous models. Apple usually lowers the price of its year-old iPhone and continues selling it as a "mid-tier" option.

But let us return our attention to color. If you had a greater choice of options would you choose something other than black or white? The iPhone 5S will reportedly break away from the purely black and silver finishes of the iPhone 5.

According to recent rumors, Apple is planning to release the iPhone 5S with the option of a faux gold back plate with a white Apple logo. The iPhone 5C will supposedly be available in six different colors, similar to the array of options introduced with the fifth generation iPod Touch.

It seems that according to a variety of poll results taken from using Input Factory’s “Polar” application, people are not too excited at all. Polar is an iPhone app that makes it easy to create and take micro-surveys.

The rumors are that the faux gold color is really more of a champagne color. There may also be a version with a black front and graphite (or grey) back plate. The colors that were covered in the Polar survey were lime (green) vs. cyan, banana (yellow) vs. melon (red), white and black vs. the colors. That would be the six colors for the iPhone 5C

The iPhone 5S will have the standard black/slate, while/silver and white/champagne (gold). It doesn’t really seem to matter what new or color variations Apple creates. The people have spoken, at least according to Input Factory’s Polar survey and the winners are black and white.

I myself have always been partial to a nice simple, elegant black phone. According to the poll as of today, 1,492 people prefer black with only 507 liking the gold. On the white side, the numbers were a bit lower but consistent. The white/silver combo had 1469 votes to 512 for the champagne.

It will be interesting to see which comes out the winner when both phones go on sale later in September. You can see the results as they continue to change until the actual launch.
