A Look at Ericsson's Radio Dot System

As technology advances, the size of the device becomes smaller. This is because engineers are able to pack more power in smaller chips that make the device more versatile while reducing its size. Historically, this is how every device has evolved. During the 1980s, bulky computers were the only things available and, two decades later, have given way to laptops and palm-tops.

Likewise, the size of mobile phones is getting smaller. The latest device in this trend is the Ericsson Radio Dot System. This small phone device can easily fit into a person's hand and is the result of two years of research and development. With more than 14 patents, this product is packed with computing power sufficient provide broadband and voice services to users in any environment.

A unique aspect of this device is its quality of service in indoor environments. This is unique because cell phone manufacturers face challenges in providing access to mobile broadband within closed buildings. Limited scalability and high costs have deterred companies from offering the highest quality of service to customers in this regard. However, Radio Dot System is likely to change this. It has an antenna system called “dot,” which delivers broadband services to users. These dots are disc-shaped radio broadcasters, and multiple dots can be connected together to increase cell phone coverage anywhere. It also offers integration with existing Wi-Fi and 3GPP networks to make it easy for users to access real-time information, such as traffic, on a need basis.

This solution, aiming to provide high-speed data to users in an indoor environment, has generated a lot of interest from companies like AT&T. Its unique abilities should make it a good addition to the mobile operators' portfolio of next-generation devices. It is expected to become available in the market by late 2014.

On November 19-21, 2013, Ericsson CTO and Head of Marketing and Strategy Vish Nandlall will be presenting a keynote presentation at this year’s WebRTC Conference and Expo III, to be held in Santa Clara, California. The event brings together companies, web application providers, investors and developers to discuss the opportunity WebRTC bring to today’s communication landscape. Registration for the show is currently open and includes access to Ericsson’s keynote session as well as dozens of other panel discussions and exihibitions.
