WordPress Gets Google Glass Plug-in

WordPress publishing program users now have a plug-in that posts photos and videos directly from Google Glass wearable tech eyewear.

"Instead of pulling out a phone or camera to take a picture that needs to be posted online right away, this is so much easier," said Ozzy Farman, senior vice president of technology innovation for Weber Shandwick, the public relations agency that developed the plug-in.

The company is a big believer in the potential for Google Glass. “The process of publishing through Glass feels as instantaneous as blinking (or winking),” Farman said. “We feel that in today’s socially driven media environment, instantaneous publishing is going to be, hands-down THE killer app for Glass.”

The WordPress plug-in, called wpForGlass, was developed for individuals to quickly post images or videos to a WordPress blog. Weber Shandwick believes it would be particularly helpful for covering live events, such as industry conferences or product demonstrations. It takes less than a minute for the media to upload, according to the company.

While one of the most intriguing features of Google Glass is voice command, the wpForGlass plug-in doesn't support voice dictation just yet.

"It doesn't support voice commands yet, but it's in the pipeline," Farman said. "That is something we hope to have up and running by the time Google Glass officially launches."

Weber Shandwick is planning on continuing to develop the plug-in, and it has made the source code available for anyone who want to contribute.

WordPress, which is an open source platform that began as a freeware blogging platform, allows developers to create their own plug-ins to work with its code.

Google Glass, a wearable computer with an optical head-mounted display, is still being tested by select users and rumors suggest it won’t be available to the general public until at least 2014. The project, which is still under development by Google, has the long-term goal of producing a mass-market ubiquitous computer.
