Aeroflex Undertakes 5G Research and Development

5G (Fifth generation mobile networks) is the next phase of telecommunication development as it denotes speeds that far exceed the ones that are currently being offered by 4G networks. It is expected to be introduced in the early part of 2020’s and is expected to offer speeds that are hard to visualize at this point in time. Though there is no official documentation on the standards or specifications of 5G technology, many companies are spending on R&D in this field.

One such company is Aeroflex, an engineering company involved in test equipment and microwave integrated circuits for clients around the world. This company is believed to be working on 5G wireless technology and is one of the founding members of the 5G Innovation Center (5GIC) program sponsored by the University of Surrey in the UK. Other members of this foundation include mobile operators, providers of tools and infrastructure for the mobility industry, companies involved in mobile communications and the University itself. Together, these participants are looking to explore new bandwidth options that will support 5G speeds.

Other than being a part of this program, Aeroflex is also working on creating an industry benchmark known as TM500 Infrastructure – a test platform that will make it suitable for testing 5G interfacing technologies. It is also creating an Isotropic Orthogonal Transform Algorithm (IOTA) for testing on the TM500 platform. This prototype is currently available at the Mobile World Congress for users to see what Aeroflox has been doing.

This research by Aeroflox is already showing some impressive results. The company is in the process of developing a modem that will interface with 5G networks. This modem is expected to lay the foundation for future devices that will harness the power of 5G. Also, this initiative by Aeroflox and the 5GIC members are likely to inspire other companies as well.
