What Does BYOD Have to Do with Sesame Street?

When you think about Sesame Street, do you think about big furry puppets, fun songs that taught you letters and numbers, and loveable characters that were practically part of your family? Can you still sing the theme song – a song that is now playing in your head as you read this?

While this may make you take a walk down memory lane, have you ever thought about the business behind Sesame Street and Sesame Workshop? There’s a whole media company there, one that has global employees who travel the world and embrace new opportunities to promote the show and its brand.

In doing so, these employees need to have access to the latest technologies. With the innovations available to use today, that means many of them are relying on smartphones and tablets to stay connected. As mobility is an important element in today’s economy, Sesame Workshop has also recognized the value of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD).

Gartner has predicted that by 2017, half of the companies in the world will have embraced BYOD. This means a lot of professionals will be traversing the globe with access to data centers and networks halfway around the world. This is great for productivity, but a challenge for the IT manager who needs to keep everything running properly and users focused on optimal performance.

As we’ve seen throughout the global marketplace, BYOD is not a passing fad and IT managers have to determine the best ways to embrace it, while still protecting corporate assets. That means putting solutions in place that allow them clear visibility into the network and its users at all times. It also means the opportunity to remotely wipe a device that has fallen into the wrong hands or has simply proven a risk.

When companies embrace the idea of BYOD, it’s not just a matter of providing employees with more control over their communications. This trend is recognizing the power of mobility and what it means for flexibility, new work models and the opportunity to stay connected in the right way, regardless of location.

For Sesame Street and Sesame Workshop, the challenges and opportunities are much like those experienced by other companies throughout the world. Therefore, they need to take advantage of the same resources and make the most of new technology so as to remain competitive.

To get the inside scoop on how they’re doing it on The Street, MobilityTechzone’s Rachel Ramsey invited their IT director into the TMC newsroom at ITEXPO. Check out their conversation in full in this ITEXPO video.
