Consumers Gain More Control Over Wireless Networks

Celeno, a wireless network technology firm, has greatly enhanced home networking solutions with the launch of their Wi-Fi Experience Manager. The service is aimed at OEMs and Internet Service Providers, enabling them to offer their customers an interface for managing their wireless home network.

With this product, Celeno has provided an API that allows providers to develop their own branded version of the technology, which can then be released to consumers, built upon their OptimizAIR 2.0 Wi-Fi Access Point technology. An app server is integrated into the Wi-Fi unit, which can then communicate with a mobile app available on both Apple and Android platforms. This enables consumers to control their Wi-Fi from a mobile device easily and intuitively.

What is being controlled, specifically, is bandwidth allocation for various devices. Users can guarantee a certain amount of bandwidth for certain devices that are deemed more important, and restrict those that are not as essential. Network bandwidth can be adjusted automatically, or manually, to react to the time of day and various other factors that may affect how users wish bandwidth to be regulated. It can also be employed to restrict guest devices from using too much bandwidth, which is especially handy in a situation where there would be many guests all wishing to connect their device to the network.

The technology also brings security enhancements, simply by giving users more control over who accesses the network. This can refer to a guest just as much as an outsider who may be leeching Internet or, worse, planning on compromising the network. Taking security a step further than password protection and encryption, monitoring functionality, gives users a visual indication of exactly who and what is accessing the Wi-Fi.

Celeno’s new API will enhance a sector of consumer-level networking tools that have always suffered from a rough interface that is difficult to interact with easily. The Wi-Fi Experience Manager is a solid step toward improving the technology’s usefulness and security and, down the line, customer satisfaction.
