AT&T Activates Three More Cell Sites in Southfield

AT&T has announced the activation of three new mobile broadband cell sites in Southfield aiming to enhance wireless coverage in the region.

The new cell sites, AT&T said, will speed up the service enabling customers to surf the Web at ease, download heavy files, and enjoy the very latest interactive mobile applications.

"Smartphones, tablets and laptops are continuing to drive unprecedented demand for wireless access everywhere. We're investing in a combination of technologies right here in Southfield to meet these needs and ensure an advanced broadband experience for all our customers," said Brian Ducharme, vice president and general manager for AT&T Michigan and Indiana.

AT&T hopes that its proposed acquisition of T-Mobile USA will strengthen and expand its network in Southfield. If approved, the deal will enable the company to expand the next generation of mobile broadband – 4G LTE – from our current plan of 80 percent of the U.S. population to more than 97 percent.

AT&T's mobile broadband network is based on the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) family of technologies that includes GSM and UMTS, the most widely used wireless network platforms.

"High speed mobile broadband is critically important to our community and our local economy.  It powers so much of how we work, teach, live and play," said State Representative Rudy Hobbs, D-Southfield.  "Expanded and enhanced service for residents of Southfield is great news and AT&T's investment is greatly appreciated."

AT&T provides access to voice service in more than 220 countries and data service in more than 200 countries. The operator also offers voice and data roaming coverage on more than 135 major cruise ships, as well as mobile broadband services in more than 130 countries.

AT&T also operates Wi-Fi network with nearly 27,000 hotspots in the U.S. and provides access to nearly 190,000 hotspots globally through roaming agreements.
