General Communication Brings 4G Service in Alaska

General Communication, Inc. the largest telecommunications company in Alaska, recently introduced 4G service in the Anchorage area.

This launch will allow GCI wireless subscribers to get information and entertainment delivered faster than any other network in Alaska.

Alaskans, with the help of GCI's 4G, will be able to surf the Internet, watch videos, social network and work without the delays experienced on competing networks.

With the capability to download speeds rated up to 21 Megabits per second, with typical speeds more than 10 times faster than current network speeds, the new 4G service helps its to make a call, download emails and use the Internet, all at the same time.

“GCI has long been the company Alaskans turn to for innovation and high speed broadband,” said Paul Landes, GCI senior vice president, consumer services, in a press release. “Now with the launch of our 4G network, our customers can now have that same experience on their wireless and mobile devices. GCI is the leader in wireless technology in Alaska and will continue to provide the best quality coverage and services to Alaskans.”

Users, in order to use the 4G network, must have a 4G compatible phone, a new GCI SIM card and associated data plans offered by GCI.

GCI plans to launch 4G service in several Alaska locations by the end of 2011, as well as upgrading many other communities to 3G speeds.

The satellite network of GCI provides communications services to small towns and communities throughout rural Alaska. The company’s newly constructed statewide mobile wireless network seamlessly links urban and rural Alaska for the first time in the state's history.

In related news, GCI purchased RADCOM's comprehensive solution to monitor GCI's multi-technology network, which includes CDMA, GPRS, UMTS and SS7.
