Samsung Named 2011's Top UK Smartphones Manufacturer

Broadband Genie, the UK's andindependent broadband, mobile broadband and smartphone information publication has announced that Samsung has beat all other competitors to be 2011's top UK smartphones manufacturer.

According to the website, which claims to offer consumers unbiased information on prices and contracts and allow them to compare providers in an independent environment, revealed that Samsung has held off stiff competition from HTC, with other contenders trailing behind. Broadband Genie compares thousands of web smartphone deals, both direct from mobile providers and from resellers.

“It's been a great 2011 for both manufacturers. We're recording around four sales by these two for every one for Apple, BlackBerry, Nokia and Sony Ericsson. LG and Motorola are a long way behind despite having some great handsets on the market,” Broadband Genie MD Ciaron Dunne stated in a press release.

According to Broadband Genie, HTC’s Desire and Samsung’s Galaxy S brands were the highest selling brands of 2011.

The best individual handset in terms of sales tracked by Broadband Genie was the Samsung Galaxy S2. HTC Desire was in second position, while Samsung's original Galaxy S grabbed the third position. The HTC Desire HD was fourth, according to the website.

Further tracking of sales showed that HTC had five models in the top 10 sellers, Samsung three, Apple and BlackBerry one. HTC's Wildfire and Wildfire S budget smartphones performed strongly (seventh and eighth respectively).  BlackBerry Torch 9800 was also populaer.

When it comes to operating systems, Broadband Genie found that Android clearly dominated he scene. Smartphones powered by Android made up around 75 per cent of sales, with the Apple OS and BlackBerry OS taking around 10 per cent each.

According to the website, though it showed promise, Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 is yet to make much impact.

“While our figures tend to mirror the global trend, our iPhone sales are far below them. We feel this is because many consumers buying Apple products tend to have their mind set on them from the beginning, rather than wanting to compare. We often remind our visitors that older hero handsets can be a better buy than the latest budget releases, so it was good to see the likes of the HTC Desire and Samsung Galaxy S still performing well 18 months after their release,” an official stated.

Earlier this month, Broadband Genie revealed that mobile broadband users in UK are not content with the current speed. Out of the 1,500 people that were polled, just 5.3 percent didn’t have any complaints about the speed of mobile broadband while 15.8 percent appeared to be at least partially satisfied. A large majority of users however were peeved that speeds were so slow while 22 percent just sat on the fence.
