AT&T to Expand its Connected Devices Program

AT&T has recently announced that the company is expanding its lineup of wireless modules for advanced Connected Devices program.

AT&T will expand the program to include HSPA+ and LTE technology in addition to modules designed for automotive and industrial applications, working with leading equipment makers Sierra Wireless, Telit, and Option. Along with the MC7700, the first 4G LTE module in the Mobile Broadband Accelerator Program, Sierra Wireless will introduce several new modules, including the SL8080 and SL8090, designed for high-volume production lines, the company stated in a press release.

“We are updating the name and substance of our successful 3G Access Program to include the latest 4G technology,” said Glenn Lurie, president of emerging device, resale and partnerships, AT&T in a company press release. “Our goal is to help companies get to market as affordably and quickly as possible, by providing cost efficient alternatives without sacrificing technology advances.”

For consumer, automotive and industrial applications, two new 4G HSPA+ modules, including the GTM601 LGA module, from Option and four new modules from Telit will be designed. For the Mobile Broadband Accelerator Program, AT&T is expected to certify a total of 24 mobile broadband modules.

AT&T has emerged as the clear industry leader in one of the wireless industry’s fastest growing areas since forming a dedicated organization to focus on wirelessly connecting new categories of emerging devices in late 2008.

Recently, the company expressed its displeasure in its response to the Federal Communications Commission calling its report about its potential T-Mobile merger “unfair” and “biased,” according to The Associated Press.

Though AT&T announced last spring that it had intentions to buy T-Mobile USA for $39 billion, the deal was struck down by the U.S. government
