GSM Module for eCall and ERA Glonass Successfully Tested for Deployment over Russia's Real Network by SIMCom

SIMCom Wireless Solutions, provider of advanced range of wireless modules for multiple technology platforms in GSM/GPRS/EDGE, WCDMA/HSPA, and TD-SCDMA, and EVDO, as well as Short Range and GPS, announced that its GSM module for eCall/ERA Glonass has been tested successfully for deployment over Russia's real network. Designed to take advantage of GSM and GPS technologies used in vehicle emergency response systems, eCall and ERA Glonass are EU and Russian driven initiatives.

The European Commission and the Russian government are backing both initiatives to enable delivery of faster assistance to motorists involved in collisions which take place anywhere within Russia and the European Union. The projects which are expected to be ready for deployment after 2013 have the backing of a number of automobile manufacturers as well as the backing of the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA).

Central functionality of the eCall/ERA Glonass initiatives is dependent on an embedded computer which closely monitors crash sensors and a GPS receiver device to automatically generate data and voice call through a GSM modem during collisions and or emergencies. What is critical to the eCall initiative is that one physical voice channel supports both data and the voice calls primarily because SMS and GPRS do not allow dedicated service priority or availability.

In a release, Jeffery Song, technical support director at SIMCom, said that, “We have implemented a comprehensive in-band modem test case on the real trial-network in Russia. The extremely positive results of the tests validated SIMCom's in-band modem capabilities and it fully meets the standards requirements, and it has convinced our customers that SIMCom is completely ready to help them win more business opportunities.”
