AxisNT Unveils LTE Remote Radio Head Platform

Axis Network Technology reportedly has launched Remote Radio Heads for original equipment manufacturer deployment of long term evolution networks worldwide.

The LTE platform features 20W output power and is based on the same design principles as AxisNT’s WiMax RRH. Last month, the company announced that WiMax RRH is in volume production on two continents, Europe and Asia.

Available for both 2.5GHz and 3.5GHz networks, RRHs can be customized to meet the specific interface and packaging requirements of the OEM.

“Now OEMs developing networks for LTE will be able to enjoy the same benefits, with RRHs customized to their own mechanical and interface requirements,” said Michel Vieuxmaire, sales director at AxisNT.

Using AxisIPR amplifier technology, operating over the 2.3 - 2.7GHz E-UTRA frequency bands, the LTE RRHs provide 2 x 10W at 64QAM of diversity multi-carrier RF power.

Company officials said that to meet a particular interface and packaging requirements of the OEM, the units – pictured right – can be customized. Also, both CAPEX and OPEX of the overall system are reduced since LTE BTS are designed using a distributed RRH approach with digital-to-RF conversion and amplification.

The use of an RRH allows the radio to be located alongside the antennas and physically separate from the base station. Officials said that this eliminates the losses associated with long cable runs which are replaced with an optical fiber data interface.

The AxisNT RRH offers multi-gigabit BTS connections, communicating through OBSAI, CPRI or custom OEM fiber interfaces.

Some of the features of RRHs are automatic calibration for transmit, receive and PA bias control loops; OBSAI RP3-01 and CPRI V2 digital baseband interfaces with one or two optical connectors; and more. Also, support for Adaptive Antenna Systems and AISG v2.0 antenna control is provided.

In addition, the unit features a lightweight modular design in a die-cast enclosure, with solar shield for outdoor use.

AxisNT is a vendor of software reconfigurable digital radios, subsystems and IP to OEMs for deployment in WiMax networks worldwide.

Earlier this week, CommAgility and AxisNT announced an agreement to develop solutions for WiMax and LTE baseband processing for wireless base stations.
