With preorders in full effect for the new iPhones, Walmart is discounting the already inexpensive offering, the 5C, to $79 – down 20 percent from its original $99 price tag for the 16GB model.
The 5C is nothing more than a revamped iPhone 5, but crafted out of polycarbonate which comes in five different colors.
Walmart usually carries Apple's smartphones at lower prices compared to other retailers, so the announcement isn't much of a surprise.
Consumers can stop by their local store's customer service desk to preorder the iPhone 5C. They'll be able to come back on Sept. 20 to pick up their device. Preorders will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis, the company said.
The mega-chain superstore also announced that they would sell the 16 GB iPhone 5S for $189, which is $10 less than the retail price. These deals require a two-year wireless contract as well.
Also starting this month, customers can bring in their old smartphone and receive money toward the iPhone 5S or iPhone 5C and receive credits ranging from $50 to $300, depending on the make, model and condition of the phone.
"Smartphones have become a part of our customers' everyday lives and as new devices launch more frequently, trade-in programs are becoming more popular," Steve Bratspies, Walmart executive vice president of general merchandise, said in a statement. "More and more, customers are choosing where they purchase new smartphones based on where they'll get the best value for their trade-ins."
The new models come equipped with updated features compared to its previous incarnations. The iPhone 5S features a new system-on-a-chip that Apple claims will make it twice as fast as its predecessor and it is the first-ever 64-bit smartphone. It also features Touch ID, a fingerprint authentication security feature.
The 5C phones are black, while all the rest of the body uses the new colors, including the buttons and switches.
The iPhone 5C costs $199 for the 32GB model, with a two-year contract where as the iPhone 5S is available in 16GB for $199, 32GB for $299, or 64GB for $399.
