UK's Argos Announces Affordable 7-inch Android Tablet for Kids

UK retailer Argos has announced the release of its own Android 4.2.2 MyTablet designed specifically for children. Argos ‘MyTablet’ is a 7-inch device running Jelly Bean. It will be available just in time for the holiday shopping season, priced right around £100 ($160).

The device features a 7-inch screen and has parental controls. Compared to competitor Tesco’s Hudl, Argos tablet for kids has downgraded specs. It features a low res screen and halved storage capacity. The battery span is also less than that of the Hudl. It will be available in two colors, pink and silver.

The new tablet supports BBC iPlayer and comes with the popular kids game Angry Birds. Google Play Store is also available on the device. It also has Wi-Fi and BlueTooth connectivity.

The Argos MyTablet also has a e-reader application. It features a 1.6 GHz dual-core processor and 6GB of memory capacity. It also features a 2MP camera on the back and a low resolution VGA camera for video chat on the front.

Argo says it is focusing on targeting kids between the ages of eight and 13.

Simon Barry, Argos’ technology trading manager, recently told the BBC, “Kids find it hard to share, so we’ve priced our tablet at a level that means everyone in the family can have one. We know a lot of families are probably feeling worse off [financially] this Christmas than last. We’re confident MyTablet is going to do really well.”

Back in September Argo announced a new partnership with the popular online auction site eBay. The partnership allows shoppers to order products from eBay and then pick them up at Argo stores. That new partnership and the release of the companies new MyTablet clearly shows they are making a strong push into the world of technology.

Argos MyTablet will become available on Wednesday, Oct. 16 through the Argos app or in its 700 stores across the UK.
