Octasic and Deltenna Join to Demonstrate Smallest UMTs and LTE-ready Small Cells

If you are involved in the technology industry, chances are you are in Barcelona, Spain right now for Mobile World Congress 2012. This exciting event is taking place through March 1, and offers not-to-miss keynotes and panel discussions, a product and technology exhibition featuring 1,400 exhibitors, and App Planet, the Center of the Mobile Apps Universe. In addition, this conference serves as a way for mobile technology specialists to network and share best practices and tips, helping the industry to continue to expand.

Octasic Inc., a provider of media processing and wireless solutions, has inked a partnership with Deltenna Limited, a company that designs wireless infrastructure and access points in order to develop brand new small cell base station solutions including the Microcell/Small cell platform, the WhiteStar, which will showcased at MWC.

Developed specifically with OEMs, integrators and operators in mind, this platform has the ability to operate two standards simultaneously through dual TRx 2x2 MIMO paths (TDD & FDD). Through allowing system integrators to significantly ramp up the time to market with their Microcell/Small cell solution, it helps to increase the flexibility and capacity (64 HSPA+ users in a 10 km cell) powered by the OCT2224W baseband SoC.

“We have effectively produced a Small cell that offers the performance of a Microcell with the power consumption of a Femtocell in a package no larger than a smartphone. OEMs who are looking to fill a gap in their product road map will find that WhiteStar enables them to get a solution out to market much quicker and with minimal engineering resource,” Andrew Fox, CEO at Deltenna, said in a statement.

“Our partnership with Octasic was crucial in helping us reach our vision for the WhiteStar. The OCT2224W offers impressive power efficiency which was the key to achieving such a high level of integration. Competing devices consumed too much power preventing us from reaching our 5” by 2.5” form factor,” he added.

WhiteStar boasts multiple capabilities including a dual-core ARM Cortex A9, a Wi-Fi Access Point and GPS-based timing and is standards-compliant with GSM, EDGE, WCDMA, HSPA+ and LTE.

Extremely power efficient and small in size, the platform is only 9” by 5” by 4” and weighs less than 5Kg.

In order to support the growth of the small cell basestation market, Octasic’s OCT2224W SoC ships come complete with a 3GPP PHY software library.

“Octasic reduces time to market by pre-integrating our software-based PHYs with Trillium’s protocol stacks on our OCT2224W SoC.” Emmanuel Gresset, vice president of Software Defined Radio at Octasic commented. “Our partnership with Deltenna was key to providing a highly-integrated SDR hardware platform to our customers. This combination makes it easy for any OEM to deploy quickly while reducing risk and remaining future proof.”

To see the new platform, be sure to visit booth #2H58 of Hall 2.
