Sequans Celebrates Release of 15th Device to Use its 4G Chip

It's easy to overlook the less flashy players in the smartphone market. While the upfront names – Apple, Samsung, HTC, Nokia, etc. – get all the attention for making the phones themselves, companies like Sequans Communications, a 4G chipmaker, get little attention for the less flashy but still crucial roles they play.

Fortunately, Sequans Communications has no problem patting itself on the back, as the company announced Tuesday that there are now 15 Sequans-powered mass-market 4G smartphones and tablets available to consumers around the world. The latest device to sport a Sequans chip is the HTC EVO Design, a mid-range Android device available exclusively from Boost Mobile in the United States and from Global Mobile in Taiwan.

"WiMAX continues to add subscribers, is featured in some of the world's most advanced devices, and is delivering high speed wireless to 4G-hungry users around the world," Georges Karam, Sequans CEO, said in a press release. "Sequans remains the leader in WiMAX chips and we are very proud to provide the WiMAX connectivity for some of world's most iconic 4G smartphones and tablets such as the HTC EVO Design."

The EVO Design is expected to do particularly well in Taiwan, as Rosemary Ho, chairman of Global Mobile, said she expects the number of Global Mobile subscribers to double by the end of the year thanks to this device.

"The 4G-enabled EVO Design is a beautiful smartphone with very high performance, powered by the most advanced WiMAX semiconductor technology from industry leader, Sequans," said Ho. "We are very pleased to make this superior 4G WiMAX smartphone available to our customers."

Sequans Communications recently partnered with global 4G networking solutions provider, Greenpacket, to produce a new dual-mode WiMAX / LTE CPE, the industry's first 4G WiMAX and LTE TDD indoor dual-mode integrated access device (IAD) solution.
