D-Link SharePort Mobile Companion Makes Hotspots to Go in Canada

Yesterday, D-Link rolled out some very good news for Canadians with tablets and smartphones. Specifically, they made the announcement that their popular SharePort Mobile Companion device was making its way to Canadian shelves, and with it, the ability to turn any Internet connection into a complete hotspot solution.

The SharePort Mobile Companion comes in a package about the size of a standard tablet charger, making it highly portable. When it gets to where ever it's meant to go, meanwhile, it will offer a variety of useful features that make it every bit as welcome a travel companion as a user's own tablet. It can function as a wireless router, providing Wi-Fi access anywhere there would ordinarily be a wired connection, or as a Wi-Fi hotspot, allowing multiple devices to use a single account at a wireless hotspot a user would pay for. It can work as a repeater, extending a wireless signal throughout a home, or as an access point in general, allowing an Ethernet cable to plug in and take advantage of the network.

All very worthwhile, but the SharePort Mobile Companion also reportedly offers a USB port, which can be used to stream media from USB drives or for charging devices. It also offers, at no extra charge, the SharePort Mobile apps for iOS and Android, which in turn powers that streaming mentioned previously. It offers Wireless N connectivity for fast, reliable speeds, as well as a 10/100 Ethernet port, WPA or WPA2 security, Wi-Fi Protected Setup available with a push button, and a pair of active firewalls.

Finding a SharePort Mobile Companion should be relatively easy, as they're said to be in "most national retailers across Canada", and are expected to hit shelves at $59.99. D-Link's General Manager, Lou Reda, described the launch into Canada as a way to help Canadians keep their mobile devices connected no matter what. He elaborated "There's nothing worse than finding out you can't connect your tablet or smartphone in your hotel room because a wireless network is not available or reliable. The SharePort Mobile Companion solves this issue by allowing you to transform any wired connection into your own personal wireless hotspot."

For those who do a lot of traveling, or who just use a lot of Wi-Fi connections, a SharePort Mobile Companion has a lot of potential uses. Whether it's being used at home to extend Wi-Fi signals or stream media, or used on the road to get the best connection possible, the SharePort Mobile Companion looks like it will have plenty of utility for users, and as such, bears looking into further.
