The Map App and Apple Lemmings

All my friends who know me as an “Apple Hater” have expected me to get on the map app discussion and tell them how much I am against it. However, I am sorry to disappoint them since I don’t really disagree with the app.

As so many of us do, I base my judgment on sound market research such as my one Apple obsessed daughter, who told me why she was buying “the 5.”

Many times in life, I have been impressed with people’s ability to support their decision absent of any real evaluative data.  This was one of those times.

Here is the reality: it really does not matter whether the app is better, it’s an iPhone.

That in effect was what Mark Zuckerberg was saying when he said that betting on HTML5 was a misstep. Apple has the advantage of owning so much of the marketplace that the criteria for evaluation is skewed in the company’s favor.

Now, to speak well of Apple and to accept that they are members of the industry, they are very active at the W3C trying to progress HTML5. So I will not bash them, but merely point out that I have a lot of apps to choose from on AT&T Android.  Strangely, the best is Google Navigation.  The best on my Sprint Evo is Sprint’s.

The goal should not be to have the device manufacturer be the be all and end all. Most of the other players get that and eventually lemmings leave.

P.S. Whoever owns the domain AppleLemmings.com get in contact with me.  I have got an idea for you.
