Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 Sports Big Screen, Mid-Range Specs, Dual-SIM Capability

Samsung is perhaps the smartphone manufacturer best known for flooding the market with a large number of phone variants. Sure, Nokia’s taken to releasing a wide array of slightly different models these days — try recalling the difference between the Lumia 520, 620 and 720 without using Google — but Samsung’s still king in this area. It’s not a knock against the company since it’s a strategy that has clearly worked out and kept Android leadership afloat in the U.S. smartphone market, as well as worldwide.

The point is, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that Samsung has unveiled another smartphone, the Galaxy Grand 2.

The Galaxy Grand 2, obviously the follow up to last year’s Galaxy Grand, falls somewhere between the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 in terms of screen size with a 5.25-inch 720p HD display that puts it comfortably in phablet territory. However, in terms of specs, it comes in well below either of Samsung’s flagships as it runs on an as-of-yet unspecified 1.2GHz quad-core processor and 1.5GB of RAM all supported by a 2,600 mAh battery. Still, it far outclasses its predecessor, which ran on a dual-core processor with WVGA resolution.

It may seem strange to release a phone of this size with middling specs, but it’s part of Samsung’s winning strategy: There’s a Galaxy device for everyone. There are bound to be people out there that want a larger device but don’t see the sense in shelling out the money for more premium devices. The Galaxy Grand 2 neatly fits this niche. Besides, the phone runs Android Jelly Bean version 4.3, so it’ll run smoothly on anything above a dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM — see the Moto X for proof of this.

The Galaxy Grand also offers one feature foreign to the Galaxy S4 and Note 3, as well, with its dual-SIM capabilities.
