Firefox OS Appears on ZTE's Two Latest Phones

Firefox OS is one of the youngest mobile operating platforms to enter the market. However, its anemic introduction was made up for by a genuine interest by hardcore fans of Mozilla and people seeking low-cost smartphones that aren't complete failures. So far, this tells us that Android might have a run for its money in the low-end smartphone market, and ZTE – one of the biggest global phone manufacturers – was quick to take notice of this.

As a result, the company has launched two new Firefox OS phones that will take part of its “Open” series: the Open C and Open II. ZTE is optimistic about projected sales figures, looking at a potential of over one million handsets sold before the end of this year. The release of these new phones will cement ZTE's relationship with Mozilla, which began when the company released the ZTE Open – its first Firefox OS phone ever – in 2013.

“ZTE's strong relationship with Mozilla is in line with our focus on developing a range of devices that fit the consumer's needs,” said Mr. Kan Yulun, VP of ZTE Corporation. “Consumers want innovative devices that are also cost-effective and by delivering not just one, but two of the first devices with the latest version of Firefox OS, ZTE is continuing to push the boundaries and bring its customers the very latest that mobile technology can offer.”

The Open C will be using the latest version of Firefox OS and comes with a more beneficial performance package when weighed against its cost. Sporting a Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 dual-core chip running at 1.2 GHz and a 4-inch screen, the phone outperforms the original ZTE Open significantly. Additional specifications include 512 MB of RAM, and 4 GB of on-board storage.

The Open II also runs the most recent version of Firefox OS. This phone is meant to be a step up from the ZTE Open, but not as much of a performance juggernaut as the Open C.
