Legislation to Expose the Risks of RF Radiation

One of the most significant debates in today's tech world is cell phone radiation. It has been debated by scientists and lawmakers for the past few decades because of the potential risks associated with exposure to radiation. In fact, exposure to radiation can increase the chances for cancer or other health problems; cell phones emit radio frequency (RF) energy that can be absorbed by tissues that are nearest to the phone.

This has been shown by several studies as well. One recent study showed that when people used a cell phone for more than 50 minutes, the brain tissues on the side that was exposed to radiation metabolized more glucose on the other side. Though these are preliminary results, a lot of research is going on in this field.

As researchers are looking into this use, lawmakers want to play it safe and, therefore, some have introduced bills that would provide information to users about its potential side-effects. One of the first states to take concrete steps in this direction is the state of Maine. According to the recent Children's Wireless Protection Act, all cell phones sold for profit have to advice customers of the heightened risks for children from cell phone exposure. This labeling, similar to the ones found on cigarette packets, should be displayed prominently on the cell phone's external package. The idea behind this labeling is to focus on the radiation safety measures taken by the manufacturer to control radiation levels within the device.

Despite this first big step, the legislation will go into effect only after four other states also adopt the same measures. Contrary to popular opinion, Americans who are concerned about cell phone radiation will not have to wait long for this legislation to take effect because Hawaii Senator has introduced a Senate Bill that will force manufacturers in Hawaii to display the warning labels on the package.

If other states also follow suit, it may not be long before cell phone radiation will get a greater focus than ever before.
