FCC to Auction Wireless Spectrum Band

The use of wireless devices has increased by leaps and bounds during the last decade. In fact, there are more wireless devices than Americans today, and the number of wireless devices is expected to increase exponentially during the next few decades due to the growing use of the “Internet of Things.”   For many years now, wireless service providers and the Wireless Association CTIA have been advocating for more licensed spectrum.

To meet this demand from CTIA, the FCC has decided to make more spectrum available for commercial use. A recent report released by the FCC shows that it is taking efforts to promote the efficient use of existing and new spectrum by promoting sharing and collaboration. In tune with these efforts, the FCC has laid the groundwork for the auction of 65 MHz spectrum for mobile broadband.

This auction is the largest amount of spectrum that was made available for mobile broadband since 2008, when the 700 MHz band was auctioned. This auction also comes along the heels of the success of H Block auction. The report released by the FCC lays down the regulatory and technical rules for operating in the 65 MHz spectrum of the AWS-3 band.

This move by the FCC is expected to give a big boost to wireless providers as it gives them more bandwidth to enhance their service. To make the most of this bandwidth, wireless carriers are investing billions of dollars to develop their network infrastructure.

Due to these developments, U.S. businesses are expected to become more competitive. As for individuals, they are all set to enjoy one of the best wireless services in the world. Already, the U.S. is home to less than five percent of the world's wireless users, but have more than 50 percent of the world's LTE/4G subscribers. With this additional spectrum, the quality of wireless service is likely to soar.
