WiLAN Trades Patents with Nokia Networks

WiLAN has continued its relationship with Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) with a recent patent license agreement, the continuation of a similar one signed as far back as 2006.

WiLAN is company based out of Canada that specializes in developing technology mostly involving wireless communication and mobile devices as well as Wi-Fi-related tools and extensions. The company also specializes in licensing its technology patents, serving over 280 companies that cover a broad array of modern gadgets.

NSN is a data networking and telecommunications equipment company based in Finland with a national presence. The company’s product lines include many devices and systems that are dependent on the technology WiLAN has researched and patented, resulting in the symbiotic relationship between the two companies that is found so commonly in the telecommunications industry.

The agreement, specifics of which are confidential, grants NSN access to a variety of wireless patents. The technologies are wide-ranging, including CDMA, WCDMA, GSM, HSPA and 4G/LTE.

"We are very pleased to have negotiated this license with Nokia Networks," said Jim Skippen, President & CEO. "It underscores the value of the technologies that we have added to our portfolio of wireless patents."

In the reverse direction, NSN has sold a number of patents to the company directly, rather than licensing them. These patents will be integrated into WiLAN’s current portfolio and allow them to keep expanding their offerings. This is the main method WiLAN uses to diversify their portfolio, as opposed to only owning patents on technologies that they develop themselves.

The nature of these patents are also confidential, but presumably related to wireless handset and infrastructure technologies.
