Private Networking Through LTE Introduced by Verizon

Any network, regardless of the type or size, needs a solid management system in order for it to both provide the necessary services and run efficiently. This is something that can be quite a daunting task in a wireless network. The Internet of Things (IoT) has been adding a lot of traffic to the network, as well as creating the need for application functions running on various devices.

This week, Verizon announced that it was introducing a new LTE wireless traffic management service. The new offering from the wireless carrier is its new Private Network Traffic Management service. The service will be offered to Verizon’s business and government customers, affording them the ability to prioritize critical network-based applications.

As smartphones, tablets, modems, routers and other machine-to-machine (M2M) devices become more critical to the way a business operates; a method of securely integrating all of these devices into the existing system without losing any of the benefits that already exist is needed.

Essentially, with this new service, Verizon provides a way to isolate a private network that mobile devices can be connected to. By separating mobile data from public traffic and offering a direct connection to the company’s internal network, IT gains the ability to control it.

The new service is a subscription-based offering which is only available to Verizon Private Network customers. For a per user monthly fee, Verizon’s new traffic management service can be added to select Verizon Private Network 4G LTE devices based on the service level option selected.

According to Verizon Enterprise Solutions’ vice president of enterprise networking and innovation, Shawn Hakl, “The surge in enterprise mobility and IoT adoption by organizations has created a demand for powerful networking solutions that are the growth engine for successful initiatives. Whether an organization is responding to a public safety crisis where mobile communications among first responders can be life-saving, deploying collaboration and mobile tools to enhance productivity among employees, or offering condition-based solutions for maintaining machinery and improving the customer experience, combined wireless and IP environments that offer speed, reliability, flexibility and security serve as a significant differentiator, particularly as more organizations are turning to software defined networking solutions.”

The idea behind this solution is that employees will have more connection options, while IT will have more control of the management aspects. There is no need to deploy and manage complicated device configurations in order to establish network connectivity. The Verizon Wireless Private Network infrastructure is completely scalable so as new or different needs are identified they can be quickly implemented for smartphones, tablets, routers and other wireless devices for access.

Carlos Benavides, who is the associate director of product management at Verizon, said "Private network management is most needed in congested situations. Customers will have a portion of LTE available for mission critical apps and the rest of their apps can be sent over the available LTE speed."
