Comings & Goings: Ultra Mobile Hires Former Toyota Executive as COO

Ultra Mobile, a nationwide mobile carrier developing mobile phone services with unlimited international communications, recently hired Sherrie Simmons as Chief Operations Officer, with the responsibility of driving innovation and operational excellence across the company’s various telecommunications verticals.

As COO, Simmons will be responsible for streamlining product release cycles and improving overall efficiency with new launches, overseeing innovation and development initiatives. Leveraging her technical background and experience with large-scale operations, Simmons will also assume direct responsibility for enterprise project management, technical project management and operations, engineering and architecture, worldwide customer care and local facilities and logistics management in the Costa Mesa office

“Sherrie’s background and skill set in both technology and operational management will be instrumental in driving Ultra Mobile’s continued growth at this stage of our development,” said Tyler Leshney, president, Ultra Mobile. “At this pivotal moment in Ultra’s growth, we were looking for talent that complemented the company’s scrappy, development mentality with a thorough understanding of global operations. As we transition from a startup to a scale-up organization – growing our staff, expanding into bigger markets and incubating new products – Sherrie’s expertise in lean operations management will help Ultra eliminate inefficiencies to better serve our customers.”

Simmons began her career as a developer before shifting into project, technology and systems management at Toyota Motor Corporation. Following a long tenure there, Simmons moved to MedAssets, Inc. where she ultimately became Senior Vice President of Operations. As a consultant, she’s worked with major corporations, including Nissan Motor Corporation, Avery Dennison, Guthy-Renker and SDI – the world's leading media translation services company – and, most recently, served as interim-CTO for Defy Media.

“I’m excited to join Ultra as it pivots towards large scale projects and new ventures, helping our organization innovate and grow by creating a highly autonomous and aligned team,” said Simmons. “With ambitious growth plans for 2016, Ultra will execute on its strategic agenda through a flexible and agile operation, while retaining a sharper-than-ever focus on spend management and efficiency through the end of the year.”
