Tecom Launches UMTS Small Cells Powered by Ubiquisys Femto-Engine Intelligent Cell Software

Taiwan-based Tecom, a telecommunications equipment maker, announced the availability of a complete range of UMTS small cells, all powered by Femto-Engine intelligent cell software from Ubiquisys.

Michael Kwan, CEO of Tecom said in a release, “Tecom has a formidable reputation for product innovation in carrier, enterprise and consumer markets. In little more than a year we have developed the broadest range of intelligent small cells. The combination of Tecom equipment innovation and Ubiquisys software intelligence creates a compelling solution for mobile operators.”

According to officials the range includes residential, enterprise and outdoor cells. Vendors have been splitting their small cell portfolio by using low-cost femtocell technology for residential deployments and using traditionally-engineered picocell/microcell technology for enterprise and public spaces.

The uniqueness of Tecom’s products depend on self-organizing femtocell technology which reduces the deployment and management costs significantly especially for enterprise and public space/outdoor cells.

The range consists of FC1020 Residential, a compact 8 call/14.4Mbps HSPA femtocell with outputs of 10 or 20mW. It features Ubiquisys ActiveRadio technology for fully automatic, real-time interference management.

The FC1060 Enterprise is a 16 call HSPA femtocell with outputs of 100 or 250mW. The device can be desk, wall or ceiling mounted and it features ActiveRadio, and Ubiquisys ActiveSON technology. This enables femtocells to self-organize to create a seamless and dynamic grid for enterprise coverage.

The FC1080 public space and outdoor device is a 16 call HSPA small cell with outputs of 250mW or 1W. IP67 enclosure can be pole, wall, vertically or horizontally mounted. It features Ubiquisys ActiveRadio for automatic, real-time coordination with the macro network, added officials.

Chris Gilbert, CEO Ubiquisys said, “Small Cell is a broad category that includes both traditional and modern technology. By automating traditional radio planning, Ubiquisys technology has changed the economics of coverage and capacity forever - not just for residential, but for enterprise and public spaces as well. We’re delighted that Tecom has incorporated Ubiquisys intelligence into its leading-edge range of small cells.”

Ubiquisys develops intelligent femtocells and small cell technology. Its cells continuously listen to the surroundings, making autonomous decisions about configuration, relations with cell neighbors and application triggers.

In other news, Network Norway, a provider of mobile business solutions, started offering enterprise femtocells to its customers in Q1 2011 in association with Ubiquisys.

In six months, the full coverage mobile enterprise solution generated enough returns to the operator’s innovation and proved the value of Ubiquisys’ femtocell grid system.
