Sony's Multi-Screen Dot Switch Said to be Released Next Month

Digital Trends site reports that Japan’s consumer electronics giant Sony Corp. has released a teaser video that talks about a new device called Dot Switch. From the description provided by the Digital Trends site, the Dot Switch appears to enable multiple devices to be controlled from a single source like a Sony smartphone.

A 30-second video clip, wrote Digital Trends reporter Andy Boxall, “shows someone tapping a big glowing button on the screen of their Xperia phone, which then activates different devices ranging from the improbable — a gramophone and confetti cannons — to the more likely, a Sony flatscreen TV and a remote light dimmer.”

According to Digital Trends report, at the end, the video guides you to a Sony website that has some Japanese text under the words “New entertainment from Sony,”  the Dot Switch name and a date, of Feb. 21, 2012. In his report, Boxall wrote that an official Dot Switch Twitter account says that “a new multi-screen entertainment” system will be announced on this date.

Though it is not clear what exactly is Dot Switch, the hardware site calls it a new entertainment system. While another site describes it as a four-screen platform that permits multiple Sony devices to seamlessly communicate with each other.

Last year, Boxall wrote that this concept was outlined by Sony’s CEO Howard Stringer, who at the time called it a “four-screen” concept that would allow easy connectivity across multiple screens, such as phones, tablets, televisions and computers.

Because the information was translated from a site with .jp extension, where all the text was in Japanese, the Digital Trends report suggests that this new Dot Switch device would first debut in Japan in February.
