Calling All Technologists

Tim O’Reilly was recently interviewed by GigaOm about SOPA and in my opinion, the article cut off a piece of thinking that really has to be expanded. O’Reilly said, “tech and lobbying don’t mix.” He expanded to explain his true thoughts on his blog.

The reality is that tech is just like a gun. We have all heard the quote “guns don’t kill people; people kill people.” In this case, tech doesn’t write bad law, people write bad law. 

And let’s make no excuse. Congress has a lot on its plate and in our pluralistic society; Congress does not focus on tech. They can’t even put it on their agenda.

So it’s no wonder that from Incentive Auctions to Intellectual Property the afterthought of legislation is the aftermath of consequences.

It would be nice to have a hyppocratic oath for tech; “First do no Restrictions.”

We are seeing some real problems coming our way and I would like to see the tech guys come to Washington and help explain the unintended consequences of “helpful legislation.”
